How do I verify my alias domain with a verification file?

Updated over 2 weeks ago

While it's possible to reroute traffic from your website domain to branded links, we highly recommend using a dedicated domain for your short links.

  • Simpler to set up - just update DNS settings, no CMS configuration needed

  • Faster - one less redirect hop for your users

  • Easier to troubleshoot - fewer moving parts that can break

  • More reliable - no dependency on your website's CMS staying configured correctly

When using your website domain to shorten links, you will need a verification file if your alias domain uses a redirect method other than a 301 status code. If you're using a 301 redirect, no verification file is needed.

To upload the verification file:

  1. Save the file as "rebrandly" (with no file extension) on your device.

  2. Access your website's content directory and create a folder named ".well-known" (including the dot) at the root ("/") level. If this folder already exists, skip this step. Contact your hosting provider for specific instructions on creating folders and uploading files.

  3. Upload the "rebrandly" file into the ".well-known" directory.

  4. Test that the file is accessible by navigating to https://yourwebsite.com/.well-known/rebrandly in your browser (replace "yourwebsite.com" with your actual domain name).

If you can view or download the file, Rebrandly will be able to verify your domain. You'll receive a confirmation email when verification is complete.

Removing this verification file from your site will cause you to lose domain verification within Rebrandly.
