How do I verify my alias domain with a verification file?

Rebrandly

While it's possible to reroute traffic from your website domain to branded links, we highly recommend using a dedicated domain for your short links.

  • Simpler to set up - just update DNS settings, no CMS configuration needed

  • Faster - one less redirect hop for your users

  • Easier to troubleshoot - fewer moving parts that can break

  • More reliable - no dependency on your website's CMS staying configured correctly

When using your website domain to shorten links, you will need a verification file if your alias domain uses a redirect method other than a 301 status code. If you're using a 301 redirect, no verification file is needed.

To upload the verification file:

  1. Download the verification file from this link and choosing "Save As..."

  2. Save the file as "rebrandly" (with no file extension) on your device.

  3. Access your website's content directory and create a folder named ".well-known" (including the dot) at the root ("/") level. If this folder already exists, skip this step. Contact your hosting provider for specific instructions on creating folders and uploading files.

  4. Upload the "rebrandly" file into the ".well-known" directory.

  5. Test that the file is accessible by navigating to https://yourwebsite.com/.well-known/rebrandly in your browser (replace "yourwebsite.com" with your actual domain name).

If you can view or download the file, Rebrandly will be able to verify your domain. You'll receive a confirmation email when verification is complete.

Removing this verification file from your site will cause you to lose domain verification within Rebrandly.
